What to do After Purging Your Closet

I cleaned my entire closet when I participated in The January Cure. I took some items to Goodwill at that time, but I’ve since cleaned out my closet again while sorting through my summer items. I know it seems like a daunting task, especially if you’ve never cleaned out your closet. Starting with one small section of your closet or even getting started with one drawer will help empower you to get organized. The worst part about purging your closet is trying on all your clothes.  Can you say time-consuming?

Now that you’ve finished sorting your items into your donate pile, here are a few way to get some money back into your pocket:

1. sell your clothes, shoes and accessories on eBay

Yes, this does work. I recently sold a pair of sandals, sunglasses and a purse. Have a brand new Victoria’s Secret bra that has never been worn? Sell it! You’ll be amazed at what people will buy. All you have to do is a little research regarding the brands of your items and see if other people are selling it. Then, figure out a price point to start your auction.

Don’t be disheartened if you item doesn’t sell. A lot of my items don’t. You can relist your auction or try a resale shop.

2. sell your clothes, shoes and accessories at a resale shop
In the Milwaukee area there are two resale shops that I frequent.

ReThreads Clothing will buy new, used and vintage items. They also have a great storefront. It usually takes about an hour to go through your items. Once they have given you a cash value for the items they want to buy, they will give you two options: store credit or cash. The store credit has considerably more value, but you are buying more items for your closet. The cash is cash. Take it or leave it.

The other resale shop I visit is Plato’s Closet. They have the same appeal as rethreads, but definitely choose different items to buy. They accept brands from Target, Gap, Aldo. I would say they have a wider appeal to the brands at your local mall. The storefront is usually packed with items and time consuming to shop.  According to the website, there is a downtown Milwaukee location coming soon!  That means less driving.

3. take items to Goodwill
Once you’ve sold your items on eBay and to your local resale shop there might be a few items left over. This week I had five items that did not sell. Even if you made five dollars back on a shirt that doesn’t fit quite right, you’re still ahead. Put your leftovers bag in your trunk and take it to your local Goodwill. They will give you a donation receipt where you can log your items you’ve donated. This way you can get a credit on your taxes for next year.

What to Wear Under That Strapless Dress

May 8th, 2013

Yesterday I posted a roundup of some fabulous strapless dresses that could be worn to attend a wedding. Now, what do you wear underneath that strapless dress?

After some research I still don’t know. Below is a couple items I found, but they were all under the search term “bridal bustier” – which isn’t what I want. I know that they’ll work also, but it was difficult to find one that wasn’t white, ivory or beige.

Why is it impossible to find the one that Isla Fisher wore in the movie Bachelorette?

Strapless Dresses Fit for a Wedding

May 7th, 2013

I have two weddings to attend this summer and I’ve been wanting to wear a strapless dress. On all the shopping websites I’ve been browsing, there have been many white strapless knee-length dresses. Obvs a major no-no. This is a roundup of some of the dresses I’d like to wear. Oh, and emerald is in.

Anoraks

May 3rd, 2013

I was shopping with my friend at Forever 21, scouring over every rack to find something suitable to wear. Forever 21 seems to be all trends and nothing that I can wear at least once a week to work. Also, nothing is of quality there and every purchase is a disappointment after a few washes.

I did find an anorak in army camo with studded shoulders. It was $50. I wanted it, but I couldn’t fathom paying that much at Forever 21. I like, but I won’t buy it. I left it behind in search of other anoraks with better quality. Here are my picks of the spring styled anoraks.

Library and Information Science Masters Degree

library Library and Information Science Masters Degree

I was reading this post from The Beat That My Heart Skipped and I couldn’t believe it. The woman interviewed in the post works in London and she has an MA in Librarianship. MA. Master of Arts.

WHAT?

This whole post confused me because, for the past two years, I’ve been studying to achieve my Master’s also. On May 19, 2013 I will have a Master’s of Library and Information Science with a focus in Archival Studies. Even my undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science in Information Studies. Science. It is common in the US to have a MLIS or MLS.

It’s odd to see that it is considered a MA and BA overseas. Perhaps the United States takes it more seriously?

“The MA at Brighton covers the more traditional aspects of librarianship (collection development, cataloguing and classification) alongside units which examine the changing role of the information professional in society, and issues relating to the social context of information in the digital age.” - Ruth Collingwood

This paragraph could technically cover some of what I studied at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. I never really looked into programs at other schools, but I know the University has to have ALA accreditation in order for the diploma to be legit.

The University of Sheffield has a MA of Librarianship and this blog post talks about MA Librarianship also. This is all so baffling because I’ve only heard about programs that are similar to the one I’m studying. Even on the ALA website it recognizes the Master of Arts programs.

Mind blown.
